In simple words, by reading the word ‘movable property’ we can understand that this section is talking about something valuable. Apart from being valuable, the property is also movable and it also means that property can be moved from one place to another. But this section will not count any property which is attached to the earth as ‘movable property’. All the properties that we can feel and sense are counted in this section.

  • Exceptions: There are many properties that we cannot consider as movable properties such as electricity, music copyrights, patents, etc.

The definition of movable property is given differently in several IPC actions. Some of the definitions are as follows:

Section 3 (36): of the General Clauses Act defines movable property as:’Movable property shall mean property of every description except immovable property.’

Section 2 (9) of the Registration Act, 1908 defines property as: ‘movable property’ such as standing timber, growing grass, vegetables, and fruits.

All the properties that we can feel and sense are counted as movable property in section 22 of IPC. It includes goods, creatures, cash, and deposits, etc. The term “property of every description” is wide and covers a wide range of assets that can be owned.

  • Good: We can touch and feel the goods and can carry them from one place to another and from one to the third place without any hassle. Goods also contain vegetables and other organic products that can be cultivated.
  • Animals: Mammals, insects, reptiles, birds, etc. also come under section 22 of IPC. Yes, it is also a moveable property as they can be moved from one place to another.
  • Money: Money is any item or medium of exchange that symbolizes perceived value such as cash, banknotes, coins, etc.
  • Securities: We would like to tell you that shares, bonds, etc. also count as movable properties.
